Essay Contest

  • For youth aged 14-18

In the Black community, we often have “play’’ aunties, uncles, and siblings who are not biologically related to us. This tradition has roots in West African models of familial, or kin, ties, that includes our neighbors and friends as full family members. It also helped to spiritually and physically protect enslaved Black people, especially children, when torn apart from their families due to being sold. How has the legacy continued into the 21st century, and in what aspects, if any, has it lost relevance or effectiveness? Consider how you have, or have not, benefited from non-familial guidance from someone in your community for youth aged 14-18!
